On the way to beautiful cycling destinations we quickly think of the French Alps, or the north of Italy in the Bormio area with the mythical Stelvio around the corner. But there is more and you don't have to drive that much further. Trentino, just above Lake Garda, is such a place. Representatives of Trentino Marketing even claim that Italy really starts here. We had to discover that!<\/h6>\n

Ambassador and cycling guide Michele talks bluntly about the region<\/span><\/p>\n

On the way to Molveno, 40 kilometers from Trento, we imagine what awaits us. Companion Rob and I both have a lot of cycling experience, but Trentino as a cycling destination is unknown to us. We're going to be surprised. The name of the hotel predicts beautiful surroundings. Alpine resort Belvedere turns out to be a stately hotel in the center of Molveno. Molveno, located on Lago di Molveno, is a small charming village. I can well imagine that it is teeming with tourists here in the summer. Hotels and restaurants abound and the area, with the lake and surrounding mountains, is beautiful. Standing on our balcony and looking out over the lake and the Brenta Dolomites, Rob and I only want one thing, cycling! It is our arrival day and a ride with guide Michele is not scheduled until the next day. We decide to change clothes and go for a bike ride in the area.<\/p>\n

Brenta Dolomites<\/h6>\n

We drive out of the village and cycle along Lago di Molveno towards San Lorenzo in Banale. Wonderful to be in Italy! I don't speak the language, but if you pronounce three place names in a row and end with arrivederci or va bene, it quickly sounds as if you are explaining the way to the bakery to someone in perfect Italian. The road along the lake runs gently downhill and we can keep going. As mentioned, towards San Lorenzo in Banale. Cycling through the valley we see snow-capped peaks of the Brenta Dolomites in the distance. In San Lorenzo we decide to return to Molveno, it starts to rain lightly and tomorrow we have to go with guide Michele.<\/p>\n

Awakened by the church bell<\/h6>\n

We don't have to set the alarm clock. The Molveno church bell wakes us up well in time for breakfast. When we report to the hotel reception, Michele is already waiting for us. Michele is what you call a real guide. He talks enthusiastically about the area. Although the weather is not really attractive for cycling, we still go out. Rain jackets in the back pocket as a precaution. We discover the Molveno area in September. No mass tourism now, but the region is certainly not extinct. While climbing to the ski village of Andalo, Michele tells us that tomorrow he is going on a hike with a group of Swedish ladies. That sounds nice. When he tells us that they are all over sixty, we drop out. The villages around the lake are mainly populated by families in the summer, but in the autumn it is the retirees who flock to Trentino. Especially for walking.<\/p>\n

Ferrari wines<\/strong><\/h6>\n

A wonderfully long descent over good and wide roads with beautiful hairpin bends takes us to Mezzolombardo. Via Nave San Rocco we arrive at the banks of the Adige River. We drive along this river towards Lavis. Vineyards dominate the area. Around the capital Trento there are vineyards on beautiful hills and in picturesque valleys. They even reach up to an altitude of 800 meters. This is very high by European standards. This means that Trentino is an ideal place for making fresh and powerful still wines, with beautiful acidity, due to its altitude. And above all, it is a region where delicious sparkling wines come from. In fact, the acids in the wines from the higher slopes are ideal for sparkling wines. Ferrari winery has been making a sparkling wine here since 1902 that can compete with a good Champagne. We cycle towards Lavis. Michele chats effortlessly about the region, old ski lifts and therefore wine. Time to increase the pace uphill.<\/p>\n

Vineyards dominate the landscape<\/h6>\n

From Lavis we start climbing. Soon we can enjoy a beautiful view. The vegetation on the mountain slopes is low due to the vineyards. You can easily see four or five mountains further here. Beautiful! We no longer hear Michele talking. In fact, when we look back he has disappeared. Not surprising, the friendly ambassador of Trentino is at least 10 years older than us and cycles with a large backpack on his back. No idea what he has with him. The climb ends in Palu di Giove. We wait here for Michele and when he catches up with us again, he has no need to recover. He's taking us to a big trophy. A large copper cup is located here at the beginning of the village. It is an enlargement of the cup that Tom Dumoulin held up when he won the Giro. It is not without reason that the cup is in Palu di Giove. This village is the birthplace of no fewer than two Italian cycling heroes, Francesco Moser and his cousin Gilberto Simoni. In the center of the village we can refill our water bottles at a natural spring. Delicious!<\/p>\n

Child of the region, Gianni Moscon<\/h6>\n

We descend to San Michele all'Adige and on the way to the valley the view is fantastic. The rugged Dolomites stretch out before you. Via a deserted country road we arrive at the foot of the final climb of the day towards Molveno. Trentino may be unknown territory for us, but this is certainly not the case for Italian cyclists. Because who do we meet on the deserted country road just mentioned? The great and much discussed Italian cycling talent Gianni Moscon. He uses the deserted country road to perfect the position on his time trial bike. And with results. In October he became Italian time trial champion for the second time. Moscon is a child of the region and has known for years that the Brenta Dolomites are great for cycling. Anyway, I digress. The last part of the ride takes us back to Molveno via Spormaggiore, Cavedago and Andalo. With mountains up to a height of 1,400 meters, this area is wonderful for cycling. The view on this last climb is also phenomenal. Back in Molveno we treat Michele to a well-deserved lunch on the edge of Lago di Molveno. Rob and I have to leave Trentino again the next day and head to Villabassa in South Tyrol. The next adventure awaits us there.<\/p>\n

Op weg naar mooie fietsbestemmingen denken we al heel snel aan de Franse Alpen, of aan het noorden van Itali\u00eb in de omgeving van Bormio met de mythische Stelvio om de hoek. Maar er is meer en je hoeft er niet zo heel veel verder voor te rijden. Trentino, vlak boven het Gardameer, is zo\u2019n plek. Vertegenwoordigers van Trentino Marketing beweren zelfs dat Itali\u00eb hier pas echt begint. Dat moesten we dan maar eens gaan ontdekken! Ambassadeur en fietsgids Michele vertelt ronduit over de regio Op weg naar Molveno, op 40 kilometer van Trento, fantaseren we wat ons allemaal te wachten staat. Metgezel Rob en ik hebben beiden veel fietservaring, maar Trentino als fietsbestemming is ons onbekend. We gaan ons laten verrassen. De naam van het hotel voorspeld een prachtige omgeving. Alpenresort Belvedere blijkt een statig hotel in het centrum van Molveno. Molveno, gelegen aan Lago di Molveno, is een klein sfeervol dorp. Ik kan me goed voorstellen dat het hier in de zomer wemelt van de toeristen. Hotels en restaurants in overvloed en de omgeving, met het meer en de omliggende bergen, is prachtig. Staand op ons balkon en uitkijkend over het meer en de Brenta Dolomieten, willen Rob en ik maar \u00e9\u00e9n ding, fietsen! Het is onze dag van aankomst en pas de volgende dag staat er een rit met gids Michele op het programma. We besluiten ons om te kleden en gaan een rondje in de omgeving fietsen. Brenta Dolomieten We rijden het dorp uit en fietsen langs Lago di Molveno richting San Lorenzo in Banale. Heerlijk om in Itali\u00eb te zijn! Ik spreek de taal niet, maar als je drie plaatsnamen achter elkaar uitspreekt en afsluit met arrivederci of va bene, klinkt het als snel alsof je in perfect Italiaans aan iemand de weg naar de bakker staat uit te leggen. De weg langs het meer loopt vriendelijk bergafwaarts en we kunnen lekker door stampen. Zoals gezegd richting San Lorenzo in Banale. Fietsend door de vallei zie we in de verte besneeuwde toppen van de Brenta Dolomieten. In San Lorenzo besluiten we weer terug te keren naar Molveno, het begint zachtjes te regenen en morgen moeten we op pad met gids Michele. Gewekt door de kerkklok De wekker hoeven we niet te zetten. De kerkklok van Molveno wekt ons ruim op tijd voor het ontbijt. Als we ons melden bij de receptie van het hotel, staat Michele ons al op te wachten. Michele is wat je noemt een echte gids. Enthousiast vertelt hij over de omgeving. Hoewel het weer niet echt aanlokkelijk is om te gaan fietsen gaan we toch op pad. Regenjacks uit voorzorg in de achterzak. We ontdekken de omgeving van Molveno in september. Nu geen massatoerisme, maar uitgestorven is de regio zeker niet. Michele vertelt ons al klimmend naar ski-dorp Andalo dat hij morgen een wandeltocht gaat maken met een groep Zweedse dames. Dat klinkt gezellig. Als hij vertelt dat ze allemaal de zestig al zijn gepasseerd haken we af. De dorpen rondom het meer worden in de zomer met name door gezinnen bevolkt, maar in de herfst zijn het de pensionado\u2019s die naar Trentino trekken. Met name om te wandelen. De wijnen van Ferrari Een heerlijk lange afdaling over goede en brede wegen met mooie haarspeldbochten brengt ons naar Mezzolombardo. Via Nave San Rocco komen we aan bij de oevers van de rivier de Adige. Langs deze rivier rijden we richting Lavis. Wijngaarden domineren de omgeving. Rondom de hoofdstad Trento bevinden zich wijngaarden op fraaie heuvels en in schilderachtige dalen. Ze reiken daar zelfs tot op een hoogte van 800 meter. Voor Europese begrippen is dat zeer hoog. Dat betekent dat Trentino een ideale plek is voor het maken van frisse en krachtige stille wijnen, met mooie zuren, door de ligging op hoogte. En vooral is het een streek waar heerlijke mousserende wijnen vandaan komen. Sterker, de zuren in de wijnen van de hogere hellingen zijn ideaal voor mousserende wijnen. Wijnhuis Ferrari maakt hier al sinds 1902 een mousserende wijn die kan concurreren met een goede Champagne. We fietsen richting Lavis. Moeiteloos keuvelt Michele maar door over de streek, oude skiliften en dus wijn. Tijd om het tempo bergop wat te verhogen. Wijngaarden domineren het landschap Vanuit Lavis gaan we klimmen. Al snel kunnen we genieten van een prachtig uitzicht. De begroeiing van de berghellingen is door de wijngaarden laag. Je kijkt hier zomaar vier of vijf bergen verder. Prachtig! Michele horen we inmiddels niet meer praten. Sterker nog, als we achterom kijken is hij verdwenen. Niet gek, de gezellige ambassadeur van Trentino, is minimaal 10 jaar ouder dan wij en fietst met een flinke rugzak op zijn rug. Geen idee wat hij allemaal bij zich heeft. De klim eindigt in Palu di Giove. We wachten hier op Michele en als hij ons weer heeft bijgehaald, heeft hij geen behoefte om bij te komen. Hij neemt ons mee naar een grote trofee. Een grote koperen beker staat hier aan het begin van het dorp. Het is een uitvergroting van de beker die Tom Dumoulin omhoog hield toen hij de Giro won. Die beker staat niet voor niets in Palu di Giove. Dit dorp is namelijk de geboorteplaats van maar liefst twee Italiaanse wielerhelden, Francesco Moser en zijn neef Gilberto Simoni. In het centrum van het dorp kunnen we onze bidons bij een natuurlijke bron bijvullen. Heerlijk! Kind van de streek, Gianni Moscon We dalen af naar San Michele all\u2019Adige en onderweg naar het dal is het uitzicht fantastisch. De ruige Dolomieten strekken zich voor je uit. Via een verlaten landweggetje komen we uit aan de voet van de slotklim van de dag richting Molveno. Trentino mag voor ons dan onbekend gebied zijn, voor de Italiaanse fietsers is dit zeker niet het geval. Want wie komen we op het zojuist genoemde verlaten landweggetje tegen?
